  2. Just realised i've not introduced myself....sorry guys. Well, I'm almost 60, and have been researching my uncles carreer in the RAFVR flying Mosquitos for the last 15 years, and by god, it's been fun. Have found out some amazing facts, and still not nearly finished yet. Also doing his bros time in the paras, end of WW2 to 1948, after Palestine,.plus my paternal Grandfathers time in the RA during the Blitz in London, Scapa Flow and the South Coast. Loving all of it...;) I'm collecting mainly items to do with the time the family members served, but pick up odd things at car boots and junk shops, just cant help myself. When I'm not doing that, I go hunting for deer and fox, I shoot three calibres of centre fire , on my syndicate place, and farms I have permission to shoot on. I do a wee bit shotgun stuff too. I also go sea angling, on my mates boat, mainly for Tope and Common Skate, the biggest was 13lbs over the UK record, which is 227lbs...:) It's all gone downhill from there...:) Up till recently, i had my own wee boat, a seahog shortie, with a 50hp four stroke, but sold it due to lack of use...:) Anyway, a great place this, I've been on the FB page for a good while, but this site is amazing.

  5. Hook was badly portrayed as a malingerer in the film and quite a few complaints were received from family ancestors, but like any other soldier you had training in fieldcraft and weapons, if you had a trade you went that way, His VC was rightly deserved, but he looked nothing like the actor Booth who portrayed him, in fact he was,nt a patient, he was assigned, among a few others, to protect the patients in the hospital, which he did, he had received good conduct pay a few days before Rourkes Drift. I believe he left the army 18 months afterwards and died in the 1900s and his grave depicts the care and respect attributed to this hero

  6. At this rate we will have to change the forum name to Militaria, innuendo network.

  7. Hi All We have just heard that Ofcom have dismissed all the complaints made against World War 2: Battlefield Recovery, the show I was a presenter on that aired on Channel 5 throughout January. This means an awful lot to me. I always knew that neither we nor the producers did anything wrong, but the external regulator has confirmed this and released the following statement..... “We assessed a number of complaints that this series was offensive and disrespectful in its treatment of war graves. We won’t be taking this forward for investigation. “The series dealt effectively with potential audience concerns about the contributors’ methods. It made clear that the specific practices adopted were undertaken within recognised protocols. Scenes that featured human remains were dealt with sensitively, and the contributors appeared visibly moved by their discoveries.” Thanks to all for your support over the past few months. This forum and it's members have always been honest and direct, but at the same time fair and measured in their comments, and I thank you for that. It means a great deal to me to see positive comments about the show, especially from those who watched and enjoyed all four episodes. Kind regards Steve T

  8. Named red frock to Major Orr of the Welsh Regiment dating to circa 1909. He served through WWI being shot in the head at one stage and recovered to return to the front, he served post was at the Military academy and was commander of 2/Welsh in the late 1920's. i have managed to find out a very full history for him, including an actual post card from him as well as online descriptions of his wounding, his wedding and lots of other information.

  12. Hi Manu, I will watch them anyway my friend As far as I know the Italian/ German medals were only ever issued with the standard ribbon, as shown on my example. I have seen one example with another ribbon in place of the standard combined national Italian and German colours, but this set belonged to an Afrika Korps soldat who was killed in action in North Africa. For reference purposes see the attached photo. Regards, D

  17. Hi Dermot, have you seen that? And it's but one of the thousand episodes. Yes,there are two war movies on El Alamein, thje first hails back to 1954 and it's calle "Divisione Folgore" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TCB4Zn408o4 And the other is a 2002 color movie called "Line of Fire..El Alamein" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zfSv87ZuJf4 Both are full of true episodes, like the one in the first movie, when Sgt Bartolini deliberately drove his car into a British mine field to open the way to the rest of the column, after the Germans stopped it before entering the field. In the early movie there are many original WW2 Tropical uniforms worn and a few Germans wear what look like genuine LW tropical suidecaps! Too bad you don't speak Italian for they're very interesting movies with no rethorics! Sorry for digressing so much!Back to your medal,do you know if there was a ribbon for this medal being worn as the EK and OM ones? Cheers Manu

  21. @David Grigsby. Hi, the VC is the Victoria Cross the highest honour a member of the British armed forces can win. Your equivalent is the Medal of Honor. Hope this helps.

  22. Got a couple of new WWI British examples . A No.19, and a No.35. Neither is 100% original ( repro plunger on 19, & 35 body is a refurb) I'm still happy with both! I collect pretty much all eras of grenades but there's just something about these WWI pieces. it just feels like you HAVE something!

  23. Typical, I give you a terrific idea ,to use a cardboard roll, so no damages happen, then its taken to its lowest form, debased, brutalised and thickened with innuendo, the nuns in the convent will be turning in their hassocks.

  24. There wasn't politics involved in my post,my friend, believe me,I just wanted to point out that the REAL Italians didn't think twice about fighting for their freedom. The "4 days of Neaples" was the beginning of the REAL resistance against the Germans. And if you will spare a few minutes I beg you t watch this clip...it's an episode about Gennaro Capuozzo,a 12YO who wanted to join the adults to fight against the Germans. He found a Breda MG and went from stronghld to stronghold asking "where the War was" until a former NCO took the weapon from his hands hoping to keep him out of trouble. At this point Gennaro looked for another weapon, found a grenade and attacked a few advancing German tanks with it and was mown down by MG fire. It's as real as it can be,with Neapolitans taking in their very peculiar way of the period! It begins with his mother looking for him in a hospital. Gennaro earned a postumous "Medaglia d'Oro al Valor Militare" (The Italian equivalent to a VC)! Cheers Manu P.S.;it doesn't matter if your Italian is not very good...they talk in Neapolitan and I can get 4% of what hey say!

  27. Still laughing now @Waffenamt Ok, you can pick up German Incendiary Bombs almost anywhere. However, what you can't pick up is genuine trench art, blitz art, lampshades made from attributed Blitz pickups. This incendiary actually got reported on our FB group, which was nonsense. The owner wanted a valuation and must people said it was worth virtually nothing. I really liked it, so bought it from the owner. What I liked was the engraved plaque dated it to a time and place in London that was at the peak of the blitz, and an area that was heavily attacked. When the owner shipped it to me he separated the bomb from the base and found old two core wire inside. It's obviously been converted to a lamp back in the day, I'd imagine just post war. With a little bit of help from IKEA, here we have it, a sympathetic restoration. I love it...

  28. I've got a pretty good knowledge of Chinooks, having photographed every single bit of them. However, the last one I did wasn't in great shape... I still wouldn't fly in a Mk2 to this day. Spent a week on the hills with his one, I was the main Police Photographer on it and documented the wreckage for the investigation... http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-northern-ireland-27655435
