Calling all Japanese Sword Experts

Can anyone help identify the maker or age on this Japanese sword ?

It looks like a WW2 Gunto, but for some reason the blade has been highly polished or maybe plated. Not sure why.

Any help would be much appreciated as this is way outside my area of knowledge

Not yet. 

Identifying Japanese swords is difficult if you are not familiar with the language and alphabet.

Hopefully there will be an expert among the MCN members

A good friend of mine has translated the signature ( Mei ) shown on the tang (Nakago).

Signature of Maker - Satō Kanesumi ( Well documented Military Sword Maker )

Location of maker - Seki

Dated - Shōwa 17 which was 1942
